John’s 2009 YZF-R1 – The Ultimate Road-Going Superbike!

Below is the bike as it first arrived, where we did a baseline dyno pull. We'll post numbers and a before/after dyno after we finish.

The next stage was a complete teardown.

Next, we installed some of the good stuff!

Rotobox Boost Carbon Fiber Wheels with Ceramic Bearings

Motoholders Subframe w/Carbon Fiber Trays

Lacomoto Carbon Fiber Swingarm Covers

Lacomoto SBK Hugger

Brembo Underslung Brake Caliper Kit (Nickel)

A little fresh Pirelli rubber tops it all off!

Next, we delve a little deeper into the heart of the beast!

We ported and decked the head, added some Graves Motorsports Camshafts and did a ceramic transmission and water pump bearing upgrade to free up some parastic loss and smooth things out a bit!

The difference in OE vs these bearings is quite astonishing.

As we prepared to get the engine assembly back together, with titanium bolts of course, we had to ensure that the SBK-spec engine had enough air to optimize power output.

This was done with:

Superbike Intake Plenum
Carbon Fiber Intake Tubes (Now NLA)
Graves Motorsports Upper/Lower Velocity Stacks
MWR WSBK Air Filter

We also used a Graves Cam Chain Tensioner to ensure precise timing and we like the oil passage this unit has.

Here are some shots of those parts installed as well as the engine placed back into the frame. We wrapped the airbox in heat shielding as well, the minimizes the heat from the engine impacting intake temperatures.

Next up we added some more braking and chassis upgrades.

Next up, we needed to ensure this bike would have adequate cooling, especially with it being on the road.

We opted for a Samco Hose Kit and CSF Radiator Kit. John wanted a blacked out aesthetic, so the radiator was custom coated to further enhance efficiency and meet the desired aesthetic.

We also added a Lacomoto M1 Airbox Cover in Twill Gloss Carbon Fiber.

In addition to the aforementioned performance modification, John's exhaust was upgraded to the Graves LINK full system.

We also added Lightech Chain Adjusters with Lifters and added 39N Racing button pods, which were custom wire to control a variety of functions, including turn signals!

Next up we get into the suspension.

We are using the following:

Ohlins TTX GP Shock Absorber, with a custom DLC Coated Shaft

Ohlins FGRT Forks – Anodized Fork Bottoms and DLC Coated Tubes

SBU Suspension Linkage – Anodized Black

We're using Braketech Ductile Iron 330×6 Rotors on the front end.

Next up we have some really cool GP-spec custom brake lines with Staubli Dry Break / Quick Disconnect fittings. Very nice stuff indeed!

At this stage, w have the bike mostly reassembled and have added a few more bits:

Lacomoto Carbon Belly Pan

Lacomoto Carbon Frame Covers

Lacomoto Carbon Fiber Upper Stay

Brembo RCS-Style Clutch Lever

Brembo RCS 19 Brake Master Cylinder

EK ThreeD Chain

Vortex Front Sprocket

Driven Hard Anodized Aluminum Rear Sprocket

Controls all finished up!

All buttoned up – in the end, this bike made an additional 34 peak horsepower after completion and gained over 40hp at 13,000 RPM. Peak torque gain was 11 ft/lb. There was a massive power increase in the midrange, largely due to awful We think with some more aggressive camshafts and and some tweaks, we could have gained another 7 horsepower or so, but this bike was intended to be reliable and offer John many years of trouble-free enjoyment, perhaps at the expense of a few horsepower.
